This piece of research compares a number of cities with one another. The research makes one single exception: it adds in the Gaza Strip which, even though it is not a city but in fact a large area of land, has been included to give the comparison added perspective.
At the time of writing, January 6th 2009, Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/) revealed statistics concerning the size of various urban centres and their respective populations. I took the population and divided it by the city’s size (square kilometres). Here are the results:
Paris..................249
Mumbai...............22643
Monaco..............16818.
Buenos Aires........14946.6 people/Km2
New York............10482.0 people/Km2
Tel Aviv..............7530.9 people/Km2
Singapore............6844.
Jerusalem............5971.
Mexico City..........5950.2 people/Km2
Rio de Janeiro.......5671.0 people/Km2
London...............4939.
Amsterdam..........4549.8 people/Km2
Ashdod...............4376.
Sderot................4288
Haifa..................416
Gaza Strip............4114.1 people/Km2
Toronto..............3973.
Rishon Leziyon......3821.1 people/Km2
Washington DC.....3699.9 people/Km2
Stockholm............3330.
Shanghai ............2930.6 people/Km2
Gaza City ............2713.1 people/Km2
The statistics reveal that the claim regarding congestion in what is loosely termed “Gaza” is a lie! The table shows that Gaza City is not the most densely populated area in the world – it is not even close to being the most densely populated area in the world! Even Sderot, which has had rockets raining down on it from the Gaza Strip every day for the past eight years, is more densely populated than the Gaza Strip is.
